With the help of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ‘s post (seriously, I used some of his tips) I got it done in just under two hours.

Kinja'd!!!

TWO HOURS? Well, yeah. I had to soak my nuts. And since my compressor works like POOP when its cold my air tools were mostly useless when the rusty nuts got stuck on the rusty threads.

Plus I had to keep stopping to take video clips. :D

That looks pretty gross.

When it warms up, you should:

Pull both rear shock mounts because the opposite side is probably just as bad,

Antiseize the shit out of every fastener you can find,

Wire brush/rust-treat/undercoat that visible rust on the inside of the shock tower with something like Chassis Saver,

Check the top side of the tower metal for any rust specks that are penetrating,

and Fluid Film everything you can in that general area before each winter.

The Mazda 3 rear shock mounts are super poorly designed for corrosion.

It might even be a good idea to take a look at the underbody sealing around the rear quarters and make sure that they actually got seam sealer on all the seams at the factory. I know on some of the later-model Subarus they got a little sloppy and some of the welds rust.

The Instagram filter makes it look worse than it is.... but I did think about breaking out my POR15 and slathering on a coat or two. But it was 10pm and I wanted to just be done.

Maybe come spring...

I don’t see this car lasting that long for me to put in the effort. If the right car comes along at work I might trade it in. I owe less than its worth anyways.

I’m thinking I should probably do mine soon, never been done and I just crossed over 150K miles a week or so ago. Plus they’re pretty cheap and may solve that rattley sound I get from the rear sometimes...

I had a slight rattle at times too. I glaced at the mounts and they didn’t LOOK broken so I ruled them out. But who knows. It didn’t rattle this morning but I’m not saying that its cured of that quite yet.
